Final Project – FDAHS 2011-12

For this project you need to think outside the box and work quickly (this project is June 12th).

Instructions

  1. Create media inspired by the theme “L.A. Life”.
  2. Work with a partner or individually.
  3. Use materials available in class (color pencil, stencil, video, audio, paper, magazines, etc).
  4. Reference an artist or artwork.

GRADE INFO: Each artwork will be graded by your peers and prizes will be awarded to the two most successful projects  in class.

Presentation Outline

Group presentations will be conducted in class making up 25% of your projects final grade. You will be graded as outline below.

Introduction (9 points x2)

  • Introduce group members. (3 points)
  • Give a brief introduction to your project. (3 points)
  • Project film. (3 points)

Reflection (20 points x2)

  1. How did each person contribute to the group? (5 points)
  2. What challenges did you face during the project? (5 points)
  3. Favorite part? Least favorite part? (5 points)
  4. What would you have liked to do to improve your film? (5 points)
  5. Share any interesting information or experiences you had during your group project. (5 points)

Doc Film Project – Due 20.04.12 (185 points)

For this project students will work in groups to conceive, write, film and edit a short documentary film inspired by their community.

Pre-production – Group Creation / Brainstorm (15 points)

  • Form a group and submit members names via email – (5)
  • Brainstorm and select an idea for a story (on scratch paper) (10)

Production – Principal Photography (80 points)

  • Shoot photographs and video to tell your story visually.  (30)
    1. Demonstrate use of camera angle
    2. Demonstrate use of lighting
    3. Demonstrate use of composition
  • Record relevant interviews using video and/or audio. (20)
  • Upload, name, and organize all video, audio and images within a file on a computer. (30)

Post-production – Edit / Titles / Audio (60 points)

  • Edit video, photos and audio using Windows Movie Maker (50)
  • Create appropriate opening titles and end credits (10)

Delivery (30)

  • Write a one paragraph synopsis outlining your doc project (10)
  • Write a one sentence teaser for your project (10)
  • Compress and save final movie (5 points)
  • Save video file groupname_date.file (5 points)

This is the first of a three part exercise that introduce students to the fundamental elements of visual language: camera angel, lighting and composition. 

Materials / Preparation

  1. Cameras
  2. Computers
  3. Students should pair off into groups of three.
Photo Exercise  (20 minutes)

In your groups choose a location and photograph your peers in the same scene from three different angles.

  1. Low angle (like a worm looking up from the ground)
  2. Hight angle (like a bird looking down from the sky)
  3. Eye level (the camera lens should be level with the subjects eyes)

Edit / Submit (20 min)

  1. Select three of your best photos (one photo to represent each shooting angel).
  2. Email Mr. O your images with your period and student names in the subject line.
Presentation / Reflection

Students present photos and discuss how these techniques influence the various meanings we can take from a visual message.

Vlog Project: Presentation and Reflection

  2. Did it turn out the way you thought it would? Why or why not? (3 points)
  3. What challenges did you face during the project? (3 points)
  4. What would you have liked to do to improve you blog site? (3 points)
  5. How could your further the project? (3 points)
  6. What skills/lessons did you learn about digital journalism? (3 points)
  7. Favorite part? Least favorite part? (3 points)
  8. Share any interesting information you came across about your vlog topic. (3 points)

Vlog Project Requirements

Outline for vlog project due before February 3rd 2012 (115 points project).

Create Blog Site (15 points)
-Appropriate Title
-About page/summary

Vlog #1 – Introduction (30 points)
-Students introduce themselves.
-Vlog topic explained.
-Post completed vlog #1 to your blog.

School Survey (25 points)
-Create a list of 5 multiple choice survey questions
-Create a digital survey using Google Docs.
-Embed your survey on your blog.
-Summarize survey findings in a paragraph and publish to your blog.

Related Links (15 points)
-Find 3 articles in the blogosphere related to your vlog topic. Post a summary and link to each on your blog site.

Vlog #2 – Community Interview (30 points)
-Come up with three interview questions.
-Conduct 3 interviews in the school community.
-Edit your interviews into short film and publish to your blog.

Vlog Introduction: Outline

It’s important that your first vlog post includes the following:

  1. Who you are (introduce vloggers, names, interests and other factoids).
  2. What you’re vlogging about and why you chose that subject.
  3. What your goals are for your vlog (comments, conversation, followers, research?).
  4. Where your vlog can be found and how people can follow you (website, youtube, twitter, facebook?).
Vlogging projects will be posted on YouTube and the class blog

Vlog Project – Three 45-60 Second Videos

This project requires students to work in groups to create three 45-60 second vlogs about a chosen subject.

Vlog posts must follow the following format:

Vlog #1

This video must introduce each vlogger and the groups vlog subject.

  • Introduce vbloggers
  • What your group is vlogging about
  • Where you will be sourcing your information from
  • Why you have chosen the specific subject for your vlog

Vlog #2

This video must outline information collected from a survey conducted in class and/or around school.

  • Conduct digital or written survey specific to your groups subject.
  • Present findings on video using titles, voice over and images.

Vlog #3

For this vlog student group must conduct community interviews or create a video specific to their chosen subject.
